Education and Social Entrepreneurship

In India, and most countries in the world, the economic, social, and political institutions are designed to provide for the basic needs and fundamental rights of all citizens in society.  However, most are failing to address the escalating socio-economic problems for large segments of the population. Presently education focuses on knowledge transmission rather than skill building.

The challenge

Provision of entrepreneurship education is the best tool to strengthen the entrepreneurial capacity of students to launch new ventures, which have economic implications in society. Although much progress has been made, social entrepreneurship (SE) is not adequately taught in schools, and that this could be partially addressed by introducing social entrepreneurship education into the curriculum for pre-service educators.

Below is a model of the scenario of what would happen when social entrepreneurship is embraced in the education system.

Course and effect model of social entrepreneurship

Education as a tool to strengthen entrepreneurial capacity

Education plays an important role in society by creating social value and providing opportunities for social change. The provision of entrepreneurship education strengthens the entrepreneurial capacity of students to launch new economic and social ventures in the marketplace.

If aspirant educators were equipped with the knowledge and skills to serve as social entrepreneurial mentors, they would be better positioned to contribute to cultivating social entrepreneurship in schools. Also, if educators were able to inculcate a sense of social responsibility through entrepreneurial activities, there would be a positive development of students’ ability to function as socially responsive members of society.

In this regard, teaching and learning activities in schools and colleges should be directed towards enhancing pre-service teachers’ sense of social entrepreneurship theory, and practical knowledge to inculcate an awareness of how social entrepreneurship can help deal with social injustices. Having an entrepreneurship approach to teaching and learning will facilitate deliberative innovative engagement.

Social Entrepreneurship and the Economy

Social entrepreneurship focuses on the main underlying themes of achieving specific millennium development goals, namely, sustainable development, economic development, and equity among all.

From a macroeconomic perspective the importance of entrepreneurship in the economy in addressing concerns such as inflation, unemployment, stagnant economic growth, and a volatile currency cannot be ignored. Social

Entrepreneurship education can be used to eliminate the adverse effects of unequal socio-economic conditions and help marginalised individuals gain a footing towards economic freedom.  Therefore, if citizens’ basic liberties are infringed, entrepreneurship driven by social change could be used to contest these inequities.
